SpaceX Roberts Road Expansion Would Grow KSC Campus to Nearly 400 Acres
The SpaceX Roberts Road expansion application is currently a Draft Programmatic Environmental Assessment (PEA) and will go through a public comment period before final approvals.
SpaceX Roberts Road Expansion: What the PEA Covers
The campus began with Hangar X, used initially to store and refurbish Falcon 9 boosters. Hangar X-2 followed, and the site has since handled Dragon processing, Starlink payload processing, and Starship tile manufacturing.
In January 2025, SpaceX received an extension to the north of Hangar X for Starship operations, including a Starfactory and a Gigabay. Since then, SpaceX has built the first Gigabay and installed at least one transfer-aisle bridge crane, according to NASASpaceFlight.com.
The proposed expansion would add facilities to support the Starship program. Per NASASpaceFlight.com, the buildout would include Project Ignition ship static-fire stands, a Payload Processing Facility, a new road connecting Roberts Road to NASA Parkway, and likely several more Gigabays.
Once the PEA clears its public comment period and final approvals, and once water permits are submitted and signed off, NASASpaceFlight.com reports that SpaceX would likely begin several large construction projects at Roberts Road.
Flight 16 Timeline and Current Campus Activity
Booster 23 completed cryo-proof testing on October 15 and is slated for static fire in late November. Ship 43 completed cryo-proof testing on October 23 and, based on timelines from Ships 40, 41, and 42, could be ready for static fire in mid-December and transport to Kennedy Space Center in early to mid-January, according to the source.
NASASpaceFlight.com reports that LC-39A could host a booster static fire in mid-December. Assuming no issues, the source estimates the first Starship flight out of LC-39A could occur in late January, though SpaceX can shorten turnaround times and fly earlier.
